Fog on the Wold is a partnership between two life long friends that discovered a number of years back that they both have an interest in making home brewed mead. Mead is an alcoholic beverage that has as its primary ingredient honey. It can be brewed to alcoholic levels similar to either wine or beer, depending on the combination of ingredients used. These ingredients and additives can also be used to give flavoured twists on the basic concept, producing delicious sweet alcoholic beverages where no two have to be alike.
When we started down this path we saw that we'd likely need to keep good records of our experiments so that we could repeat the successes, and improve on the failures. We also saw the possibility of one day producing alcohol that we could sell commercially as something attainable.
Both being IT professionals the first thing we tackled was how to store the data that we'd be collecting (we needed a good data model). After making a system primarily for ourselves that met our needs we then realised that it may benefit other people who have similar endeavours in mind. We then met a person who made cheese at home, and the process was very similar to making mead, (make a mixture, store it, age it, moving it through stages and containers). It occurred to us that opening the system up for other users who wanted to make more than alcohol might help all sorts of people keep track of their own culinary experiments, giving opportunities to store feedback and make improvements, creating better products.
Our eventual aim is to sell our own alcoholic mead beverages to the public, but that may be a long way off as we work through the issues of ramping up production, and navigating the hurdles that no doubt most craft brewers encounter when starting out. In the meantime we are pleased to offer the public use of our Recipe and Batch Management System for a small yearly fee. We hope it helps you keep track of your delicious experiments and production just as it does ours.
